Widespread use of rainwater harvesting tanks will reduce the demand for imported treated water which cannot be carbon neutral. By reducing pressure on surface water drains, the likelihood of flash flooding in urban catchments is also reduced. It saves money, encourages people to grow more fruits and vegetables at home and helps them get more enjoyment from water by engaging with the water cycle again.
In remote locations harvested water for drinking or recycled-and-filtered grey water can be sterilised in a clear container or Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle by leaving it in sunlight for at least 6 hours.
